The Opportunity

This is a key leadership role within Council’s City Development department, responsible for leading a high-performing statutory planning team and delivering a responsive, customer-focused planning approvals service.

As Coordinator City Planning, you will play a critical role in ensuring timely, high-quality planning decisions in line with legislative and policy frameworks, while driving continuous improvement in processes, systems and service delivery.

You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, provide expert planning advice across Council, and contribute to broader city-shaping initiatives and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the City Planning team, including performance, workloads, and staff development.
  • Make and oversee statutory planning decisions in line with legislation, policy and Council objectives.
  • Provide expert planning advice to Council, internal projects, and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee planning application processes and reporting, including presenting matters to Council.
  • Drive service quality and improvement, including customer service, process improvement, stakeholder relationships, and VCAT matters.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and eligibility for membership to an appropriate professional body such as PIA.
  • Experience in the supervision of a team of planning staff, detailed knowledge of Victorian Planning schemes, the Planning and Environment Act, and statutory planning requirements and processes.
  • Awareness of current and emerging planning and environmental issues, including changes to legislation or controls, and the outcomes of major studies and reviews, to ensure that correct and timely advice and decision making is achieved within the unit.
  • Significant experience in working in a senior role as a statutory planner, and demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to motivate a group of professional and other staff.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in developing and documenting continuous improvement systems and processes in the context of service delivery by a town planning unit.
